We’re three friends currently trying to review every pub within the New Forest. Each pub will be reviewed based on 7 criteria:
- The selection of booze
- The quality of their chips
- The cleanliness of their drinks glasses
- The quality of their washroom facilities
- The customer service
- The atmosphere of the pub
- An overall score
This criteria will be reviewed using our score system nicknamed “the Neil’s scale”, as our friend (called Neil) made it for reviewing things.

Neil says:
For too long, an inaccurate rating system has been used.
“How was your day?”
“Yeah not good not bad, probably a 6 out of 10.”
Neil, wannabe statistician
It doesn’t take a statistician to work out the problem: people often rate higher on the 0-10 scale than they actually mean. Bad is a 5 or less, a neutral is probably a 6, with 7-9 meaning good. 10/10 is thrown around so much that people have to add 11 to the scale just to show that they REALLY mean it’s good.
The Neill (2017) scale was developed as rating system with the intention of eradicating inaccurate scores given by the 0-10 scale.
Ranging from -5 to +5, the Neil scale offers a clear neutral: 0. It’s not bad, it’s not good either, it’s fine – meh. Users can also choose from how good something is from +1-+5, or, how bad it is by choosing a score from -1 to -5.
Yes, I’m picky; it makes sense though.
Please keep in mind we’re doing this for fun, so don’t start threatening us if we insult your favourite pub.
